Lecture and Book Signing by Dr. Yosef Garfinkel
Title: Searching for the Historical King David: Excavating Khirbet Qeiyafa and Khirbet al-Ra'i

Date: Tuesday, September 11th, 2018

Time: 6:30 pm

Location: Seelig Room, Naylor Student Center, SWBTS Campus

The figure of King David, who was so well known from the biblical tradition, is a very elusive figure from the archaeological or historical point of view. Even in Jerusalem, David's capital city, there is no clear archaeological layer that can be related to him. For this reason, various minimalist approaches have been raised, suggesting that the biblical account is nothing but a myth. Dr. Garfinkel's excavations at Khirbet Qeiyafa discovered, for the first time in the archaeology of Israel, a fortified city from the period of King David. His excavations at Khirbet al-Ra'i uncovered another site in Judah from the time of David. In this lecture, Dr. Garfinkel will discuss the importance of the discovery of these sites.

Dr. Yosef Garfinkel was born in Israel. He studied at Hebrew University in Jerusalem, earning his B.A. in archaeology and geography, M.A. in prehistory and biblical archaeology, and Ph.D. with a focus on the pottery of the Neolithic and Early Chalcolithic periods. He has been teaching the archaeology of the Bronze and Iron periods at the Institute of Archaeology at Hebrew University since 1993. He was a visiting scholar at Harvard University, Yale University, Oxford University, Cambridge University, and King's College in London. He has extensive excavation experience, including various Proto-historic sites in Israel such as Yiftahel, Gesher, Tel Ali, Sha'ar Hagolan, Neolithic Ashkelon, and Tel Tsaf. He is perhaps most famous for his excavations at Khirbet Qeiyafa, which he began in 2007. From 2013 to 2017, he excavated at Lachish; and in 2015, he began excavations at Khirbet al-Ra'i.

Dr. Garfinkel's latest book In the Footsteps of King David: Revelations from an Ancient Biblical City will also be on sale and he will be doing a book signing.
